"gas,

with the latest agreement. "I can't
really make comments unless [the
Palestinians] follow through and
stop the incitement to murder and
stop teaching hate," she said.
Sharfman is a member of Mothers
Against Teaching Children to Kill
and Hate (MATCKH), a local orga-
nization founded recently to protest
a Palestinian Authority-funded chil-
dren's television show that praises
suicide bombers. The group also
works to expose other Palestinian
propaganda directed at children.
"You can't have peace while peo-
ple are teaching to kill," she said.
Although their people stand to
gain substantial increases in territo-
ry, even local Palestinian Americans
are "not popping the champagne,"
said Terry Ahwal, a board member
of the Ramallah Club of Detroit and
former director of the local Arab
American Anti-Discrimination
Committee.
"The reaction of everybody is,
let's wait and see, let's not start cele-
brating because we celebrated four
years ago and nothing has hap-
pened," she said. She noted that 65
percent of Palestinians in the West
Bank and Gaza are currently unem-
ployed and — due to Israeli restric-
tions — are unable to travel freely
within the Palestinian Authority or
to Israel.
"The majority of Palestinians just
want semi-normal life: to be able to
work, build a house, eat in a restau-
rant occasionally," she said. "The
majority of the Palestinian people
don't hate the Jewish community,
but they hate the circumstances that
Israel puts them under." ❑

Clinton Signs
Persecution Law

RECIPROCAL MEMBERSHIPS
AT OUR TWO LOCATIONS

Washington, J TA
resident Clinton has signed
into law a bill aimed at
combating religious perse-
cution abroad. The bill,
inspired by the Jewish community's

ED

successful efforts to free Soviet Jews
during the 1970s and 1980s and

endorsed by most Jewish groups,
gives the president the option of 15
policy responses to countries that
engage in a pattern of religious perse-
cution, ranging from diplomatic
protest to economic sanctions.
Clinton praised lawmakers for giving
him flexibility in applying the bill's
sanctions provisions.
