Farmington Hills, Southfield, West
0 Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills and
several other Oakland County towns,
said a representative's job is to repre-
sent constituents.
Citing Knollenberg for cutting
funding for the National
Endowments for the Arts, cutting
Medicare, voting against PBS finding
and environmental bills, and support-
ing prayer in . schools, Reeds said, "I
don't think the 11th District supports
the things that our current congress-
man is fighting for in Congress."
Reeds opposes Social Security cuts
and raising the retirement age, and
said people over 55 should be able to
opt into the Medicare system. A
patient's Bill of Rights to take medical
treatment decisions away from admin-
istrators and into the hands of doc-
tors, is also sorely needed, he said.
Dick Gach, Libertarian candidate for
the 11th Congressional district, run-
ning against Knollenberg and Reeds,
said he wants to propose a constitution-
al amendment restricting any private,
consensual adult behavior that harms
no one. He was the only non-
Democratic Party candidate who spoke.
Brickner, running against Marc
Shulman for a state representative seat
in the 39th District, which includes
Commerce, White Lake, Waterford,
West Bloomfield and other lakes
towns, also referred to herself as main-
stream. She called Shulman's integrity
and principles questionable.
"He promises everyone whatever
they want to get votes," she said. "He
promises quick fixes and privatization
of schools." He has "joined the right
wing and models himself after Newt
Gingrich," she said.
Mental health issues have taken a
back seat by the Republicans, she said.
Fieger called his opponent a "literal
shill of special interest," and said John
Engler is the first Michigan guberna-
torial candidate in 40 years to refuse
to debate and has rarely, if ever, held a
press conference.
Frequently calling himself "an ordi-
nary citizen," Fieger said, "I'm the first
candidate not selected by the power
brokers in either party. No one can
buy me off."
Citing Engler's "heinous" environ-
a
mental policies, Fieger said the gover-
nor destroyed the Department of
Natural Resources, gutted the polluter
pay laws, and changed the definition
of wetlands, a particularly sore point
with Fieger.
Engler, and the other Republican
candidates, weren't listening. El
