Business MANAGEMENT from page 132 prehensive schools for the internation- al management of technology-based companies was announced in December 1996. The gift is believed to be one of the largest ever for busi- ness education. Plans call for construction of a 30,000-square-foot building that will include teaching facilities, offices and seminar rooms. As many as 42 faculty members would be recruited during the first 10 years, with areas of expertise to include finance, marketing, accounting, international business strategy and innovation. The school would complement the already existing William Davidson Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management. The school has named economist Lester Thurow, former dean of the Sloan School of Business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as director. The new school's literature estimates that by January 2000, more than 300 students will be enrolled in its degree programs, with eventual overall enroll- ment at 2,500. Part-time and fast-track MBA programs are already under way for students graduating from estab- lished Technion science and engineer- ing facilities. "I truly believe that the school can become a recognized international leader in educating managers ... in time it will make a real contribution to Israel's economic and political stability," Davidson said. He noted, however, that creating the school "is only the first step. It will take considerably more effort for the school to reach its potential." Representative Lantos, an economist whose California district includes a major part of Silicon Valley and who is a close friend of Davidson, said the school is vitally needed. "Israeli science and Israeli technolo- gy are world class. Israeli management clearly is not," he said. "The bureaucra- cy that permeated Israeli society, the socialist principles that are so difficult to get rid of, have had an impact on Israeli culture, including academic cul- ture." The Einstein Award is the highest honor bestowed by the ATS. Previous recipients include actress Elizabeth Taylor, conductor Zubin Mehta and former New York Mayor Edward Koch. The Oct. 20-24 convention also saw the installation of Detroit community leader Larry Jackier as national presi- dent of the New York City-based American Technion Society. ❑ ti
