Pete Karmanos
To Be Honored
p
eter Karmanos, Jr., co-
founder, chief executive offi-
cer and chairman of the
board of the Farmington Hills
software company Compuware, will be
honored by the Michigan Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame.
Karmanos will
be the recipient
Nov. 2 of the
Alvin Foon
Memorial Award,
named for one of
the hall's founders,
for his commit-
ment to local
youth and sup-
porting the fight
Peter Karmanos Jr.
against cancer.
In addition to
his work for Compuware, Karmanos is
the co-owner of three professional hock-
ey teams, including the Carolina
Hurricanes of the National Hockey
League and the Plymouth Whalers of
the Ontario Hockey League.
Although highly honored for both
his hockey and business success,
Karmanos never takes an award lightly.
"Anytime anybody honors you, you
feel good," he said. "Sports awards are
especially rewarding."
In 1974, he began building a youth
hockey program in southeastern
Michigan, which supports players from
ages 3 to 20 and is renowned for its
player development. The Compuware
junior team has produced current
standouts Brian Rolston (Ann Arbor),
who is a forward for the NHL's New
Jersey Devils, and Joe Blackburn
(Livonia) who is a goalie for Michigan
State University. Karmanos' commit-
ment to junior hockey earned him the
NHI:s Lester Patrick Award.
"I always felt you should give some-
thing back to the community," he said.
"Hockey was the one sport I didn't play,
which is probably why I'm so interested
in it."
Karmanos has high hopes for his
Hurricanes, which play in Greensboro
this year before moving to their perma-
nent home in Raleigh next year.
"We'll get better as the year moves
on," he said, listing a divisional and
conference title as his goals for the
team. "Owning a hockey team is like
being a devil and a saint: people love
you for bringing a pro team to their
area, and hate you because you're a
greedy owner."
Off the ice, he contributed $25 mil-
lion to found the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute, named for
his late wife.
He is on the board of directors for
the Karmanos Cancer Institute, the
North American Hockey League, USA
Hockey, Worthington Industries,
Automation Alley and Detroit
Renaissance. He is a member of the
Karmanos Cancer Institute Board of
Trustees, and the NHL's Board of
Governors.
Karmanos will be honored at the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame
induction ceremony on Nov. 2 at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield. For ticket information, call
Elayne Wolfson at (248) 737-0921.
