ed what the others told her, and they

In a complete departure from
her established series, Kellerman
has taken on a new setting and a
new culture.
Buyer beware! That's all I can
say. In Moon Music, Kellerman
seems to be attempting to com-
bine the skills of Patricia Corn-
wall, Stephen King and even her
own husband, Jonathan Keller-
man, to develop a new style of
her own -- and not very success-
fully.
Moon Music takes place in Las
Vegas (certainly a good setting for
a mystery), and Kellerman's
descriptions of the Strip and sur-
rounding desert are fine. Her
characters, however, are card-
board, the plot is contrived and
involves cannibalism, werewolves
and bears — oh, my! — and she
tries to tell a story that boggles the
imagination and needs a good edi-
to r.
There is much to be admired in
striking out in a new direction, but
it seems to me that what Faye
Kellerman's readers look for in her
books is a good story with tidbits of

After all her conversations, her atti-
tude is that "everyone is right. From
their points of view there can be other
ways of looking at this issue. Every
group knows — not thinks — that
they have the answer of what to do to
save Judaism." But, she adds, "we have
to find a way to live together even if
we're not going to live alike."
She says that her own family is not
that unusual. "Now there are hun-
dreds of thousands of us." Many Jew-
ish families, she notes, "do not under-
stand that certain members are not
going to be considered Jewish in
Israel." At the same time, "there's not
a gentile in the world who won't say
that I'm a Jew.
"I think it's all too important to be
left to the rabbis. The time has come
for individuals to take an interest," she
says. ❑

Although there is a Jewish police
lieutenant in this new novel, his
Judaism has no real connection to
the story and seems forced and arti-
ficial.
Kellerman has a faithful follow-
ing, and perhaps she should stick
with what she knows best.
