The movie was released earlier this
year and has enjoyed success in the
places it has been shown, including
Baltimore and Los Angeles. At the
same time, Chiten admits to criticism
by some in those communities who
feel that Jews need not look outside
Judaism for inspiration.
"That is really myopic. Other reli-
gions help us," she said. "As long as
you are on some path and finding
meaning that enriches your life, I have
no problem with that."
Chiten has begun preliminary work
on her next project, a narrative piece

found a site for Jewish Buddhists.
She clicked on the site and discov-
ered chat participants wrapped up in
Rodger Kamenetz's The Jew in the
Lotus, a 1994 book about the author's
experience as part of a Jewish-Bud-
dhist dialogue with the Dalai Lama.
Chiten ran out to buy the book and
quickly delved into it.
While reading the book, she said,
she drove friends and relatives crazy by
forcing them to read aloud its inspira-
tional passages. Chiten wrote to
Kamenetz and sent him a copy of her
second film. He, in turn, asked her to
make a film from his book.
"We spent three months sending e-
mail and talking on the phone," but it

wasn't until Chiten met Kamenetz
that she realized the film needed to be
more than just the talking heads of
rabbis and Buddhist spiritual leaders.
She began to hang around
Kamenetz and realized the depth of
the pain he had suffered when his wife
miscarried late in a much-wanted
pregnancy. In trying to decide how to
tell the story, Chiten said, "I found
there was a connection between my
last film and this one: suffering.
"I was more interested in Rodger
than anyone," she said of her change
in focus. "He was a seeker. He was
vulnerable. So, I started to focus on
him and how one uses spirituality in
one's life to deal with suffering."
Shooting on the project began in
January 1996 and progressed steadily
for 18 months. The crew moved from
Baltimore to Delhi and Dharamsala in
India, where a seder was held using

about a woman who teaches in prison
using Buddhist principles. She also is
working on her first screenplay. ❑
