AJE Grant
Helps Children
The Agency for Jewish Education of
Metropolitan Detroit has received a
$25,000 grant from the Jewish
Connection Partnership of the Jewish
Outreach Institute for AJE's two-year-
old program, Interfaith Connections:
First Steps and Baby Steps Play Group.
The AJE is a beneficiary of the
Jewish Federation's Allied Jewish
Campaign. The grant will be used to
bring together unaffiliated interfaith
families with infants, toddlers and
preschoolers to learn about Judaism and
share experiences. The AJE's Interfaith
Connection conducts Fist Steps and
Baby Steps Play Group.
First Steps offers the services of a
team that includes a Jewish educator, a
rabbi and social worker to deal with the
spiritual, educational, mental health and
recreational needs in the families' for-
mative stages. There will be regular
workshops for parents led by a social
worker and rabbi.
Each First Step eight-session series
features a Shabbat dinner at the AJE
and an optional day at camp.
The six-session Baby Steps Play
Group offers playtime for parents and
babies and an opportunity for parents
to share concerns while children play
under the direction of a professional
early-childhood educator. Toddlers'
activities are aimed at enhancing social,
motor and verbal developmental skills.
Parent-child sessions include Jewish
music, games, stories and art activities,
and each session concludes with toddler
gym.
First Step sessions are held Monday
evenings at the Kahn Jewish
Community Center. Sessions also are
held at the Jimmy Prentis Morris JCC
on Thursday. evenings.
For information, call the Interfaith
Connection, (800) 397-4876.
