Dr. Freedman, like Foxman, was
critical of the ZOA's attempt to get
Friedman pulled as the ADL keynote
speaker.
"I thought it was a tremendous
blow to academic freedom," said Dr.
Freedman. "It was an example of how
the extreme right wing tries to shut up
people with whom they disagree."
Said the ZOA's Klein, "If people
think that certain individuals shouldn't
speak, that's McCarthyism. I think the
extremist left like Tom Friedman loves
to call people names. And he should
be ashamed."
Friedman deflects any feeling of
power" or "influence" in his position.
"I agonize over every column. I'm
in awe at the thought of how many
people are going to read this. I am still
tied up in knots. This recent issue
with the president, I had to file my
column on Tuesday night while the
president was in the grand jury room,
but before he spoke to the country.
And mine was the only column on the
page the next day
"So, when I wake up, I'm not terri-
fied, but I'm keenly aware that a lot of
people are going to read this, and you
better get it right."
Friedman said it's dangerous to dis-
agree with him, because in his words,
"I don't know anything. All I know is
what I go out and report. I've been
asked if I'm a liberal or a conservative?
First and foremost, I'm a reporter. I go
out and try to find out what's going
on. I wish I were smart enough to sit
in this beautiful office, smoke a pipe,
put on my cardigan, put my feet up
and be able to opine about the world.
Unfortunately, I'm not that smart. I
really need to do a lot of reporting, a
lot of talking to people to get the kind
of friction to shape my thoughts and
my columns."
