A spokesperson for the Rabbinate of
Jerusalem said the hotel was not follow-
ing rabbinical mandate, but rather "the
law of Torah."
"In their private rooms, they can do
whatever they want," he said. "But a
hotel dining room is a public place."
Former Israeli shaliach (representa-
tive) to Detroit, Sivan Maas, notes:
"The hotels sincerely feel that if you
abide by the religious rules, you are as
,4 pluralistic as can be. But is this so?
"There's no question that you have
to find a formula enabling all Jews to
be under the same roof at the same
time," she said. "We're such a young
country I don't think we've had
enough time to deal with this issue, but
we must."
Huntington Woods resident Bruce
Carnick took the trip with his wife,
Nanette, and two grown children, Scott
and Andrea. He says he was angry
about the Friday-night disturbance, but
it didn't ruin his first time in Israel.
"It's the proudest I've ever been in
my life about being a Jew," he says. "I
have never understood as I understand
now what that country has been
through. It was like a massive history
,art lesson."
The "history lesson" included guid-
ed tours of places like the Golan
Heights, Jerusalem, Masada and the
Dead Sea. The trip culminated in the
Seventh -Biennial Congress.
Sponsors of the Congress included
the Israel Association for Humanistic
Jews and the College for Pluralistic
Judaism in Jerusalem. Participants
0
came from the United States, Israel,
Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, France,
England, Belgium, Italy, Russia, the
Ukraine, and Australia.
However, religious Jews weren't the
only source of controversy during the
six-day event.
Israel President Ezer Weizman, him-
self a secular Jew, offended several
4 Humanists by telling them, in a
keynote speech, that Diaspora Jewry
has no future and that secular groups
are facilitating assimilation.
Overall, participants agreed that the
Congress underscored their need, as
American Jews, to become active with
goings-on in Israel.
American Jews, said Rabbi Kolton,
„lip "feel we don't have the right to tell
Israelis what to do and how to live.
"That may be valid in terms of poli-
tics," she said, "but in terms of religion,
what happens in Israel affects us direct-
ly. If anyone is providing a safeguard
against religious coercion, it's North
