Rachel Kapen, of West
Bloomfield, says, "growing
up in Eretz Yisrael in the
early 1940s, we kids had
very few toys, so we had to
use our imagination a lot.
My fascination was buttons.
"Luckily, my dear mother, Sara,
was an amateur seamstress who
used to sew all of my and my sis-
ter's clothes, mostly from shmates,
as well as my father's shirts.
"My mother had an old Singer
sewing machine with drawers filled
with buttons of every size and color.
When the sewing machine was
closed, I could sit there for hours on
end, playing school with my buttons
— I, the teacher, and they the
pupils. Light-colored buttons repre-
sented girls, while dark buttons rep- ,
resented boys. The classes were
arranged according to size.
"I never disclosed this childhood fas-
cination of mine to anyone, lest I be
laughed at. A few years ago I found
out that my older sister Shula also
played with buttons at an earlier age.
I had this revelation, which to me also°
was a vindication of my own normal-
! cy, when in one of my visits back
I home we discussed the difference
between children then and today,
and she happened to mention that
her grandchildren can't quite believe
that she played with buttons as a
child.
"Now, what about my own 2-
year-old granddaughter Kayla-Sara,
who everyone swears looks exactly
like her savta? My sweet Kayla-
Sara has a penchant for arranging
and rearranging everything in sight,
just like her savta did with the but-
tons. So do you think it could possi-
, bly be a reincarnation of my own
passion for playing with buttons
(kaftorim in Hebrew), or is this my
imagination still at work after all
these years?"
