Currently, Shiffman Hall is used for everything from youth group dances to guest performances to book fair speeches. Over the years, the Handlemans have given more than $10 million to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit-sponsored Allied Jewish Campaign, which places them among the Campaign's leading donors. They also are supporters of Temple Beth El, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The Handlemans' gift was made to the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit as part of the UJF and Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Millennium Campaign. The campaign is slated to raise $50 million, half for the renova- f . rion of the JCC and establishment of a JCC endowment, and half for the Jewish Life Fund, a new endowment that will benefit a range of activities, including Jewish education, cultural events and first-time visits to Israel. Said David Sorkin, executive direc- tor of the JCC, "The wonderful part is that both of the Handlemans are supporters of the cultural, performing and Judaic arts. The gift will also allow theproject to start one year before anything else in the building, and it will be a showcase for us." Marion Handleman is a board member and past officer of the JCC. David Handleman is a past president of the United Jewish Foundation and former chairman of the Allied Jewish It Campaign. In 1986, he received the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award, the highest honor Federation gives for distinguished community service. The Handleman Company, founded by David's father and three brothers in 1934, now distributes compact discs, computer software, books and videos. It had net sales of $1.18 billion in 1997. 4 6-4 Although the hall won't change structurally, it will be gutted and "totally refurbished with an updated lighting and sound system to make for a better facility for banquets and speeches," according to JCC capital committee chairman Hugh Greenberg. The new hall will include a portable stage and dance floor. According to Federation Executive 11P- - Vice President Bob Aronson, the Shiffman name will be carried on a plaque within the new hall. The name moved to the Maple/Drake Center from the Curtis and Meyers JCC in northwest Detroit. • MADE IN ITALY OLDSMOBILES FOR LESS NEW 1998 AURORA from page 8 ::7T,XC.G1MEMWWWWIUMAKM.;;ZW 177W14TXDVW GLOISMOM SORAB On Telegph ra at the Tel-12 Mall, Southfield 354-3300 •
