The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and Temple Israel
will present the midwest premiere of
The Jew in the Lotus to be screened 7
p.m. Thursday, Oct 22, at the United
Artist Theater, on Haggerty north of 14
Mile Road, in Commerce Township.
The film will be broadcast nationally in
January on PBS.
After the screening, the film's pro-
ducer and director, Lauren Chiten,
will give a short presentation.
The movie is based on Roger
Kamenetz's book about a meeting of
10 Jewish leaders and the Dalai Lama,
the spiritual leader of the Tibetean
people.
Tickets will be sold prior to the
showing at $5 for JCC and Temple
Israel members and S8 for non-mem-
bers. They may be purchased through
the JCC, Temple Israel or on the day
of the show at the theater.

Program Starts
Congregation Shir Tikvah's Adult
Education program will start Saturday,
Oct. 17, with a Torah study group
and this year's first Shabbat lunch and
learn program. Both sessions are open
to the public and can be attended
either together or separately.
Torah study will begin at 9 a.m.
Study will be each Shabbat morning
and cover the current Torah portion.
Participants will be asked to read the
portion and share their insight.
Hebrew reading is not necessary. Each
week, one of the participants will vol-
unteer to act as a facilitator. Bring a
copy of the Chumash and any other
study material from other sources such
as the Internet.
Following Torah study at 10:30
a.m. will be the season's first Shabbat
lunch and learn titled "Women's Role
in Judaism." Shir Tikvah hosts these
periodic discussions, which are usually
led by fellow congregants. The discus-
sions generally last 1 1/2 hours and
are open to the public. Anyone wish-
ing to attend is asked to bring a dish
to share.
