Detroit River Provides
Setting For Tashlich

Reconstructionist Rabbi Debra Cohen
participates in the song, meditation
and ritual of the Tashlich ceremony at
the Detroit River.

L

ast week was not a typical
one at St. Aubin Park and
Marina on Detroit's east
side riverfront. Strains of
Avinu Malkeinu filled the air as
Jewish families symbolically cast
away their sins by throwing pieces
of bread into the Detroit River.
Members of Congregation
T'chiyah re-introduced this tradi-
tional practice, called tashlich, into
their holiday services 20 years ago,

and liked it so much, it has
become part of the
Reconstructionist group's Rosh
Hashanah tradition.
"If only it were this easy to lose
bad habits," said member
Benjamin Ben-Baruch, who wrote
one of the meditations in the cere-
mony. "The river is the source of
life, and having this ceremony here
gives us a chance to think about
making positive changes."
"I like to feed the birds," said 3-
year-old member Zoe McCoon, as
she tossed bread toward the river,
where dozens of seagulls waited to
retrieve even the tiniest pieces.
Reconstructionist Rabbi Debra
Cohen said, "Tashlich, meaning
`You will cast,' is taken from a
verse from the prophet Micah:
And you will cast all their sins into
the depths of the sea.' In the
Tashlich ceremony, we invest each-
bread crumb with a particular mis-
deed. This gives us opportunity to
really focus on what we want to
change about ourselves in, the corn-
ing year."
Congregation T'chiyah holds
services at the Royal Oak Woman's
Club, on Fourth, between Main
and Woodward; and at the Wayne
County Medical Society, 1010
Antietam, near Detroit's Eastern
Market. CI
