s

an active member of his
synagogue who also leads
high holiday services for
senior citizens, Joe Lewis is
relatively well-known in the Jewish
community of Detroit.
But he's quickly becoming a celebri-
ty in Jewish Philadelphia.
That's because the 48-year-old
Lewis, a good-natured, chatty man
with a heavy British accent, created a
sidelur (prayerbook) used by thousands

in a popular outreach program called
Friday Night Alive.
The program, sponsored by
Philadelphia's Jewish Federation and
the CMS Foundation, emphasizes live-
ly music and dance. It aims to make
the traditional Kabbalat Shabbat service
more accessible and spiritually mean-
ingful to newcomers.
Lewis' lightweight paperback siddur
contains the traditional Friday night
liturgy but adds transliteration, English
translation and commentary side by
side in a four-column format. The
English translation, which Lewis calls
