Teaching kids a
"something fun" lesson
in being Jewish.

T

his is the first year Susan
and David Deutsch built a
sukkah on the deck of
their Farmington Hills

home.
The motivation? "We felt if our
kids got to do something fun while
learning about the holidays, they'd
feel better about being Jewish," said

Susan.
The Deutsches have two boys:
Daniel, 6, and Jonathan, 4, a first
grader and nursery school student,
respectively, in the Temple Israel
Religious School.
The family got construction advice
from Joe Roberts, a Jewish personal
trainer from Temple Israel. From
there, they erected a wood-frame
sukkah that features cinderblock cor-
ners, burlap walls and a branch roof.
Friends Nancy and Paul Gross, and
their boys, Jared, 5, and Adam, 3,
lent a helping hand.
"Everyone really enjoyed it," Susan
said. "We collected branches and
twigs in the woods, and made strands
