paid the employees only $3 an hour
back then, whereas they receive $10 to
$15 per hour now," said Palmer, "not to
mention the other rising business costs
over the years." Improvements are made
each year to the 161-year-old building.
All of the mill's employees are part- i
time, usually about 35 people for the
season. "Most of them have other sea-
sonal jobs or only care to work three
months," said Palmer, "and a few take
vacation from regular jobs the week
before Labor Day to help us get things
operating again."
Palmer says there are two types of
Franklin Cider Mill customers: The peo-
ple who were brought by their parents
years ago and teenagers who drop by in
cars or on bikes after school or on week-
ends to just "hang out."
"This place has seen many genera-
tions of the same family," Palmer said.
"It's like people making a pilgrimage to a
beloved shrine." A survey ofsome cus-
tomers on Labor Day weekend backed
Palmer's assessment. "My parents starter ,
bringing me here when I was 4 years
old," said Patty Moss of Franklin, "and
I've been coming here every year since.
Being here on opening day is a tradi-
tion. Now I'm here with my own kids
(sons Alex and Jake)."
Does the place have any business
problems at all? "Nope," said Palmer.
"Not much can go wrong during a 90-
day season. We've never been short of -
apples because the weather can't ruin the
state crop, which sometimes happens to
the cherry and peach crops. And if
something like that did occur, I know
enough individual farmers who could
cover us."
The cider-loving crowds always are
polite and respectful, said Palmer. "The
traffic jams used to stir up some corn- •
ments and complaints, and we had to
hire off-duty policemen to direct traffic.
But that all beca?ne unnecessary when
the intersection of Franklin and 14 Mile
roads was turned into a four-way stop.
"Nicht shlecht (not bad), huh?"
beamed Palmer, sipping a cup of cider
and munching on a donut. ❑
