Local filmmaker Kathy Vander's
award-winning film, "Walk This Way"
documents double amputee Ron Bachman's
strength of spirit.
SUZANNE CHESSLER
Special to The Jewish News
hen Ron Bachman was a
teenager, he had to con-
front a friend who had
been drinking too much
and was about to drive home.
Bachman decided to get behind the
wheel in place of his less-than-sober
friend.
While this probably would be a
straightforward move for most people,
it wasn't for Bachman. Born with a
medical problem that rendered his legs
immobile, he had suffered through
amputation of both when he was only
4. Unprepared to drive that evening,
he dislodged a branch from a tree,
enabling him to control the floor ped-
als, and took off.
Bachman's determination allowed
the people in the car to get home safe-
ly, but he has long known what deter-
mination is about.
Unable to tolerate prosthetic limbs,
Bachman tried walking on his hands
and found that easier for him. He
continued moving that way, as well as
making other kinds of adaptations,
until age 30, when his energy began
waning and a scooter seemed more
practical.
Despite his personal struggles,
Bachman has been able to make
friends, find work, marry and raise a
daughter. His triumphs turned him
into a motivational speaker.
A prize-winning documentary film,
Walk This Way, captures Bachman's
story. It will be shown Saturday, Oct.
17, at the Penn Theater in Plymouth.
Film producer-director Kathy
Vander met Bachman, 41, when he
was a student and she a teacher at the
Specs Howard School of Broadcast
Arts in Southfield.
"When I was young, my family
went to the Birmingham Temple,"
said Vander. "I'm not a religious per-
