hile some varieties of
literature allow us to
escape, only science
fiction confronts us
with totally alien systems, environ-
ments and values, and challenges
us to succeed in that world.
It is therefore fitting that there
exists something called "Jewish sci-
ence fiction" — for who more than
the Jews have had to survive
throu g h the unknown of historic
upheaval and within alien cultures?
Looking back into our heritage,
we find our ancestors in a constant
state of making preparations for
survival. From the Exodus from
Egypt in Torah to our rabbinic
commentaries of Talmud, our tra-
dition has invested in our litera-
ture the imperative to survive and
the impetus to creatively engage
the present, in preparation for the
future. Jack Dann's collection is
thus a most appropriate combina-
tion of medium and message.
Wandering Stars is more than
just another collection of sci-fi --
it is a statement about the richness
of Judaism. The very existence of
Jewish science fiction is in itself an
affirmation of our continuing
vitality and indomitable will. It
presumes that in the future there
will still be Judaism.
Just as our ancestors "kept the
faith," so we declare that we will
pass it on to our descendants, even
into the distant and unknown
future. It is our responsibility to
ensure that Am Yisrael Chai, the
People of Israel, live — now and a
thousand years from now, on earth
and beyond. O
