Finally, there is Levi at home in Turin, surrounded by his beloved library, savoring the taste of bread dipped in milk and fondling the petals of a red rose, making a pact with life, a truce of sorts, to hold the horror of the past at bay. (1/2 Orders Available) The idea for the festival came out of Eisen's monthly shows, "Yids in the Hall," which he takes to synagogues and theaters in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Hamilton. He toyed with the idea of a festival, then made it a reality after seeing the success of an Ashkenazi festival and a Jewish film festival in Toronto. The comedy gig features Canadian comics as well as Richard Lewis, Alan King, Robert Klein and Jackie Mason. Eisen hasn't always been gung-ho about Jewish routines. "When I start- ed doing stand-up, I shied away from doing much Jewish stuff," he admits. "The older I got, I started to do more." After a black friend hosted an "all-black" show, which "the people went nuts for," Eisen was hooked, and "Yids in the Hall" was born. "I'm working on a new sitcom called 'Jews Assembling Furniture,"' says Eisen, who works Jewish stereo- types into his routine. "It's a half-hour sitcom, but it takes 26 episodes to get it done, and in the last episode you hire a gentile to do it for you." It gets laughs, he insists. Eisen's comedy career started at Yuk Yuk's 15 years ago, after a Second City stint. He went from amateur night to headlining in Canada and the States. Now, he focuses mostly on writing. With a partner in Los Angeles, Eisen crafts movie scripts. The comedy festival offers different genres each night — one fea- tures "Borscht Belt" routines, another musical variety, and so on, with stand-up throughout the pro- gram. — Lynne Meredith Cohn 7,7:777-",77:71 TRAYS DINING ROOM • CARRY-OUT BB BAR-B-QUE HOUSE B-N Q) ormN ero Checkeo Bar-E r is (248) 968-7427 Lincoln Shopping Center 1 0-1 /2 Mile Road & Greenfield Oak Park ■ (248) 968-0022 Breakfast ■ Lunch ■ Dinner After-Theater ■ Kiddie Menu JE'Entertainment 10/2 1998 cail,The Sales Department (248) 354-7123 Ext. 209 88 Detroit Jewish News This anit_ccepou____ Dotes__ Enjoy GOURMET DINING By Former Chefs at Giorgio's & Peter's K est Side O T riii OPEN 7 DAYS 8 p.m.-9 p.m. 6393 Farmington Road, Just N. of Maple (Next to the Sports Club) • West Bloomfield (248) 626-3722 Advertise in our new Entertainment Section!
