hen singer-dancer-actress
Lorna Luft soon belts out
Broadway and
Hollywood songs at
Orchestra Hall, she will call upon per-
formance styles taught to her by the
actual composers.
All the greats — from Cole Porter to
Jule Styne — visited her home as con-
temporaries of her mom, Judy Garland.
"I was very fortunate to grow up in a
family that knew these great composers
who wrote for the MGM films that my
mom was in," Luft said in the midst of
planning her Michigan show.
Luft will appear at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 7, for the Balfour 65
Concert planned by the Zionist
Organization of America- Metropolitan
Detroit District. Sharing the bill will be
comedian-actor Robert Klein, Luft's
friend since they both performed in the
musical They're Playing Our Song.
Although Luft was not raised as a
Jew, she was raised with an understand-
ing of the religion. Her father, producer
Sid Luft, was Jewish as was her first
husband, musician Jake Hooker, the
father of her two children.
"My mother was Episcopalian, and I
was raised in the Church of England,
which is sort of bizarre," Luft, 46, said.
"I really believe that children raised in a

household that has different religions
should learn about them so they can
respect them.
"Because my ex-husband was Jewish,
my kids are the same [way] as I am.
They know about Chanukah and
Christmas [and] they know one isn't
better than [the other], just different."
Different, too, was the side of Luft's
upbringing that had nothing to do with
the glitter of show business. It involved
the dark world of alcohol and drug
dependency that brought down her
mother's career.
Garland's problem, which often led
to violence and scarce finances, was
picked up by Luft and her siblings, Liza
Minnelli and Joey Luft.
The family story — good and bad
— is told in Lorna Luft's recent book,
Me and My Shadows, which soon will
be out in paperback and which also will
become a made-for-TV movie airing in
1999.
The title comes from the author's
feelings as she followed the powerhouse
careers of her mother and sister. The
narrative recounts an achievement elud-
