state that both his memories and Ms.
Lewinsky's could be correct. Check
your conscience on this point.
Do you care that the assault on
Judge Starr is immoral and diversion-
ary? Are you aware that Judge Starr
was the man who was the bipartisan
engineer behind the removal of U.S.
Sen. Bob Packwood? If you are, why
not report that to your readers? If you
are not aware, why are you publishing
an editorial without the proper factual
foundation?
Regarding the cost and scope of
Judge Starr's investigation, my question
is this: What would the cost have been
had the Whitewater documents not dis-
appeared, had there not been a putsch at
the Travel Office, had the FBI files not
been illegally seized, and had access to
(Clinton aide) Vincent Foster's office
not been barred to the FBI?
If Judge Starr is so out of control,
then why have juries and judges con-
victed 12 of the 14 whom he has
indicted? Why has he not been
removed by Attorney General Janet
Reno or the federal court that super-
vises him? Why not report to your
readers that Judge Lawrence Walsh
spent $48 million over seven years,
pursuing a prosecution that found no
impeachable offenses and_regi'l- -

The argument that "this is a case
about sex" constitutes the Big Lie of
1998. This case is about the fact that
the president certainly has violated his
constitutional oath of office to faith-
fully execute the laws. It represents the
breakdown of the concept that one
must obey the law and not swear false
oath or bear false witness. It is about
finding out whether Kathleen Willey
and Paula Jones are telling the truth.
In short, it is about ridding the
body politic of a cancer in the White
House. This scandal has metastasized
because the president adopted a cover-
up strategy, rather than a strategy of
punishing perpetrators, waiving privi-
leges and telling the truth.
This is clearly a situation where the
High Crimes and Misdemeanors clause
engages. The country needs to clean the
executive office of the individual who is
subverting government employees and
official powers for his personal well-
being. On those grounds, I call on
Congress to move with all deliberate
speed to impeach and the Senate to
remove the president.
I also call on The Jewish News to
have a happy new year ,an

end brought on by Rosh Hashanah,
but they resisted celebrating the holi-
days, if not verbally then in their
hearts and minds.
Perhaps with a little thinking, they
may still find the value that others
have found in these holidays. Some
will read this article and understand.
Others will shake their heads and
mock the logic that has brought forth
my conclusions.
To .those who mock because of lack
of understanding, I offer advice for
the years to come. Read the English.
Feel the tradition. Most importantly,
think about where you have been,
where you are and where you are
going. Once you understand yourself,
it will make understanding others infi-
nitely easier. ❑

great," I blithely told my friends. "We
can't wait to be alone again." God, how
I lied. My brown-haired baby was the
one who kept me company when the
older two exited; the one who accompa-
nied me to foreign films with subtitles
when her dad was busy working; the
one who plopped down on my bed-
spread to share the delicious tidbits of
her daily life.
She is out there in a new world, navi-
gating uncharted seas of Ethernet con-
nections, dorm food, debit cards and
checkbooks. Guys living right next door,
pizza places and coffeehouses that stay
open all night, and even frat parties.
"Mom," she said on the second day,
"it's overwhelming!"
"Guess what, sweetheart? I know
exactly what you mean," I reply, cradling
the receiver.
The candles slowly burn, just like
they do every Shabbat, the wax dripping
onto my brass candlesticks. I will con-
tinue to light them at the same table,
just as I always have, watching their
reflective glow in the window, remem-
bering.
