be called upon, once again, to fulfill
our promise to create a haven for the
dispossessed."
Robert Aronson, executive vice-
president of the Federation, praised
Naftaly as a "creative thinker and sup-
porter of new initiatives :.. a passion-
ate man utterly devoted to his peo-
ple."
Aronson said he would continue to
rely on Naftaly's judgment. To be suc-
cessful, the Federation "can't just meet
needs, it must capture the imagination
of the entire community. Bob has
done both."
Naftaly is in line to become chair-
man of the executive committee of the
Federation Board of Governors. He
was introduced Monday night by
Robert Slatkin, president of the
United Jewish Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit, Federation's
banking/real estate partner.
In her acceptance speech
Blumenstein said she wants to expand
COJES, improve the lives of the dis-
abled and help Jews in need all over
the world. Adding to the impressive
array of travel options to Israel, she
said, is vital to Jewish education and
identity.
"I believe that trip to Israel impacts
each of us more than anything."
The emotional highlight of the
night came as Max Fisher approached
the podium to present the Butzel
award to Jane Sherman, his daughter.
"I admit to you that this is a very
difficult job to be able to talk about a
person I love and respect," he said.
"Forgive me if I'm not as articulate as
I should be."
Fisher said his daughter had always
wanted to make her mark on her own,
not because of me.
"When she was chairman of the
campaign, boy, did I have a difficult
time that year," he quipped. "She said,
`Dad, you're not giving enough
money.'"
Citing the deep sense of feeling for
her people, Fisher then called Jane and
her husband, Larry, to the podium.
Accepting the award in tears,
Sherman said "it's so great an honor to
be able to accept this award from not
only my father, Max Fisher, but from
a man who has led the Jewish world,
and the world, in such a way that
none of us can follow in his foot-
steps."
She praised the Detroit Jewish
community and its generosity, but
added that campaign dollars were
down when factoring in inflation, and
the number of donors was also lower.
