ART LEADERS

that there are only two important
things during a war — good shoes and
food, in that order.
After they go their separate ways,
Levi hooks up with a group of Italian
survivors. They wander together
through the war-torn landscape of
Russia, hopping trains, walking,
spending time in transit camps and
cadging food wherever they can.
We see people and actions through
the gaunt eyes of Levi. Occasionally
his mind turns back to the horrors of
Auschwitz. The sight of some beauti-
ful young naked children frolicking in
the grass reminds him of the children
in Auschwitz who were "like migrating
birds" that never reappeared.

Levi has taken on
the task of
remembrance.

Levi has made a point of keeping
his concentration camp uniform with
its star and his identification number,
174517, which is tattooed on his arm.
In a marketplace in Poland when he
bares the star and number, the crowd
silently disperses.
Levi has taken on the task of
remembrance. His best friend, Daniele
(Stefano Dionisi), tells Levi that God
has saved him in order that he tell the
stories of the Holocaust.
Levi's response is that this would be
the greatest of travesties, that he.
should survive instead of others in
order to be able to write. And yet,
write he does, using a modest diary
with lined paper and a fountain pen
bequeathed to him by a kindly
Russian nurse.
Rosi has done a masterful job of
directing. Along with his cinematogra-
phers — Pasqualino De Santis and
Marco Pontecorvo — he has stayed
true to Levi's original text. Many
scenes of striking visual acuity will
stay with viewers long after the film is
over: a moment in the Munich train
station when Levi silently confronts a
German soldier who is now a prisoner
of war; a walk in the forest when Levi
is finally accepting the wonders of
nature and the incredible light stream-
ing through the tree tops; the sight of
male and female survivors dancing
with one another in a displacement
camp.
