All kinds of CDs honoring the cen-

tenary of George Gershwin's birth
are finding their way into record

You'll easily recognize most of

GERSHWIN: Fantasy for Violin
and Orchestra on Porgy and Bess;
Three Preludes; Songs for Violin
and Orchestra; Joshua Bell, violin;

Writing a fantasy on themes
from an opera is not a new idea.
Writing this one on themes from
Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess
was John Williams' idea, as was
the selection of Alexander
Courage (he wrote the original
"Star Trek" theme) to do the
transcriptions.
The Fantasy turns out to be a
brilliant piece of work requiring,
and in this case getting, a high
degree of virtuosity from violin
soloist Joshua Bell (who opened
this year's DSO classical season).
Courage has constructed it with a
prologue and transcriptions of eight
of the songs in the production,
including "It Ain't Necessarily So,"
"Summertime," "Bess, You is My
Woman Now," "I Got Plenty 0'
Nuttin.'"
Conductor John Williams shows
us another side of his artistry ‘ (he
seems to have any number of sides)
as he accompanies Bell on piano on
Jascha Heifetz's transcriptions of
Gershwin's Three Preludes.

phonic arrangements (by William
David Brohn and Jonathan Tunick)
of seven Gershwin favorites includ-
ing "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable
You," "But Not for Me" and "Love
is Here to Stay."

RED HOT & RHAPSODY: The
Gershwin Groove; various artists.
Verve.
Whatever Red Hot and Rhapsody
lacks in muscle, it more than makes
up for in sensuality.
This 17-track, 70-minute tribute
to George Gershwin won't blow you
away with power chords or aggres-
sive drum beats, but it's got groove
and it's got rhythm. Who could ask
for anything more?
You can, actually. This jazz-
inflected collection, a benefit for
AIDS research and relief, also boasts
a stellar lineup of artists who push
themselves to live up to Gershwin's
song-writing legacy. David Bowie
and Angelo Badalamenti conspire on

a elegiac, almost sacramental version
of "A Foggy Day (in London
Town)" complete with an ornate
orchetral arrangement.
Also expertly mournful are Sinead
O'Connor's "Someone to Watch
Over Me," Luscious Jackson's "I've
Got A Crush on You" and Natalie
Merchant's "But Not For Me."
But the mood isn't somber
throughout: Finley Quaye pumps up
the jam on "It Ain't Necessarily So,"
producing a fun, reggae-inflected
version of the familiar standard. And
Duncan Sheik's "Embraceable You,"
while lush and down-tempo, is posi-
