NEW ON CD The recent acclaimed Nathan Lane version of Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum garnered big audiences on Broadway but suffered from lack- adaisical musical direction. If you're curious about how Sond- heim is supposed to sound, you're in luck. Rykodisc and MGM have joined forces to re-release the original 1966 film soundtrack, now on CD for the first time ever. Funny Thing (1962), the first Broadway play with music and lyrics by Sondheim — he was lyricist for 1957's West Side Story with music by Leonard Bernstein and for 1960's Gypsy with music by Arthur Laurents — garnered a Tony Award for Best Musical, and spawned the film. The movie soundtrack of Funny Thing is a wonderful addition to any musical theater fan's collection. The inimitable Zero Mostel stops the show before it even gets started with the raucous "Comedy Tonight." The ensemble piece "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid" is a wiseacre masterpiece (Jack Gifford and Phil Sil- vers join Mostel on that one) and who is that caressing the lyrics to "Lovely"? Michael Crawford?
