INTRODUCING Aniltea r s Kitchen. Resitamirdeml reproach from an ignorant and hostile society. Today, however, Sondheim speaks freely about his sexual orienta- tion. Secrest doesn't delve as deeply into the relationship Sondheim had with his father. Although cordial, it wasn't exactly warm. Sondheim spent a good deal of his time with Hammerstein, who must have sensed the emotional gap in the boy's life and effectively filled it. To this day, Sondheim gets misty eyed when talking about Hammerstein. What's refreshing about this bio is that the author doesn't use a heavy hand in psychoanalyzing Sondheim's life and his work, although Secrest does draw a few unavoidable parallels in Sondheim's life and art. Some of Sondheim's characters, afraid of social contact, cry out for recognition and approval, so it's hard to hear the lyrics to 'Anyone Can Whistle" and "Being Alive" without thinking of Sondheim s private life. Secrest quotes producer Robert Fryer: "Steve has this wall ... there is a remoteness to him. He keeps his distance." Actress and singer Elaine Stritch puts it more bluntly: "He's scary ... there's a kind of dangerous quietness about him." Even Sondheim himself confesses: "I've lived an isolat- ed life. I'm virtually the boy in the bubble." Sondheim didn't have a blissful childhood, despite being brought up in relative luxury. He was sent to mili- tary school after his parents' divorce, although he tells the author that his time, there wasn't unpleasant. A bril- liant student, Sondheim did well in school, but his attention was seized by HEAD CHEF MAHER SIHMUKARNA Certified in French and German cuisine and former head chef at the Jerusalem Hotel in Israel. As the new head chef at Anita's Kitchen, his experience in Jewish and Middle-Eastern preparation of food is also utilized to bring a one-of-a-kind catering service as well as an authentic dining experience.
