tors first come upon Ben Siegel's old barber shop, complete with an old barber chair. It leads into the master bath, which still has the original tile and plumbing. The bath's painted tile ceiling is new, and Jean Wilson, allied member, ASID, of Jean Wilson Design in Southgate, has complemented it with a hunting drapery and leopard fabric to create a masculine bath for the bachelor owner. Built-in heated towel racks, consid- ered cutting edge in today's custom homes, are original to the house, as is a central vacuum system. A guest bedroom, by Gail Urso of Grosse Pointe Park, has marigold walls and a deep green rug with an ornate carved mahogany bed and dog prints, ideal for Mr. Fisher, who will live in the house with his two canines. For- mer servants quarters have been turned into a men's reading room, in wood and deep floral fabrics. The home has a third floor, which now houses a contemporary office, an artist's studio and a historical display highlighting the heyday of B. Siegel. Completed by design students from Michigan State University with the Detroit Historical Society, the space cleverly features wallpaper created from old B. Siegel ads. ❑ The Detroit Historical Society's 1998 Fall Designer Showhouse is located at 150 West Boston in Detroit. A special opening-night gala is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2.
