TRUNK SHOW Centennial Picnic ROBERT A. SKLAR Editor T he Detroit Jewish commu- nity is invited to a family reunion picnic at the Kahn Jewish Community Center on Sunday, Sept. 27, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of organized Jewish philanthropy in Detroit. Hosts are the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and its bank- ing/real estate partner, the United Jew- ish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit. Hours are 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine. The Kahn JCC is at Maple and Drake, West Bloomfield. Picnic goers can expect plenty of fun, "with no soliciting for funds," says 100th anniversary celebration chair Michael Maddin. The picnic kicks off a series of fes- tivities with educational, cultural and social themes to honor the 1899 cre- ation of United Jewish Charities, fore- runner to the United Jewish Founda- tion. UJCharities' mission was to unite Jewish charitable causes, broaden social services and bring together Detroit Jewry under the aegis of an efficiently run, philanthropic-minded association. In the wake of growing assimila- tion, the nine-month-long centennial celebration is intended partly to deep- en Jewish identity among Jews of all stripes — from the observant to the secular, from teenagers to retirees. Picnic activities will include free games, rides, crafts and entertainment — from magicians, a - moonwalk and mini golf, to pony rides, puppets and a petting zoo. Motown's The Con- tours, the Klezmer Fusion Band, Star Trax, the Mask Puppet Theatre and Temple Beth El Cantor Stephen Dubov (singing show tunes) will entertain. Kosher food will be avail- able. As part of the picnic, the Agency for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Detroit's Jewish Experiences For Fami- lies (JEFF) will present 'Apples & Honey and Lots, Lots More." It will feature crafts and games to celebrate the holidays. Children will be invited to dip candles, decorate Simchat Torah flags and make Sukkot wind chimes and shofars. The shofar-mak- ing factory, for children 8 and up, car- ries a $10 cost per shofar. ❑ Presented by Michael G01, N.S.R. of Asch/Grossbardt Hosted by M.B.
