Tuition and enrollment increase modestly this year at area

in 1997-98.
Tuition, as well, is relatively stable.
Akiva has not raised tuition at all and
both Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit and Yeshiva
Gedolah have implemented $200
increases (at Hillel, this is less than a 3
percent increase from last year; at
Yeshiva Gedolah, this is slightly under
a 4 percent increase). Darchei Torah's
tuition has risen by 3 percent. While
precise figures were not available, the
Lubavitch Foundation of Michigan
says its tuition has risen at the same
rate as the cost of living.
At Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and
Ann Arbor's Hebrew Day School,
tuition increases are more significant:

fter years of dramatic
increases, tuition and
enrollment at local Jewish
day schools — while con-
tinuing to rise — are doing so gradu-
ally if at all.
With the exception of Hebrew Day
School of Ann Arbor, where enroll-
ment is up by 16 percent, and Akiva
Hebrew Day School, where enroll-
ment has dropped by 12 percent, most
day schools have only slightly more
students this year than last year.

a 7 percent jump at Hebrew Day, an 8
percent rise for Beth Yehudah elemen-
tary and middle school students, and a
10 percent rise for Beth Yehudah high
school students.
However, while full tuition may be
up, few Beth Yehudah parents actually
pay this amount: two-thirds of the
students receive some form of tuition
assistance. A whopping 75 percent of
Yeshiva Gedolah students and 68 per-
cent of Darchei Torah students do not
pay full tuition. At Hillel 28 percent
of students receive scholarships. Akiva
and Hebrew Day declined to disclose
how many of their students receive
tuition assistance.
