Accent On The Arts

The 12th annual Detroit Festival of the Arts takes over the University Cultur-
al Center with a panoply of more than 100 free performances of world music in
every genre, including an appearance by the Klezmatics 5-7 p.m. Saturday on
the Center for Creative Studies stage; street performance groups; an artists mar-
ketplace; activities for children; an international food festival and more. The fes-
tival site is an area bounded by Ferry on the north, Warren on the south, Brush
on the east and Anthony Wayne Drive on the west. (313) 577-5088.

Remembering Anne

Cable's popular A&E "Biography" series premieres "Anne Frank: The Life of a
Young Girl," which traces Anne's happy early years in Germany and Holland,
her time in hiding, her horrifying last months in the Nazi death camps and the

Monte-Carlo Magic

Kicking off the Dance Series at the Detroit Opera House, Les Ballets de
Monte-Carlo presents a command performance of Romeo et Juliette for H.S.H.
Princess Caroline of Monaco. With music by Prokofiev and choreography by
Jean-Christophe Maillot, the contemporary ballet will be performed 8 p.m. Fri-
day, Sept. 25; and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept 26-27. $17-$95.

Just Ax-ing

In his first appearance since 1995, pianist Emanuel Ax returns to Orchestra
Hall to perform with Conductor Neeme Jarvi and the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra in performances of Richard Strauss' Burleske for Piano and Orchestra
and Mozart's Piano Concert No. 9. Ax captured public attention in 1974, when,
at age 25, he won the first Artur Rubenstein International Piano Competition in
Tel Aviv. There is an additional performance at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. $17-
