emple Beth El in
Bloomfield Township has
added extra Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur services,
added a Tashlich service and opened
the doors to the entire community at
no charge in the three years that Rabbi
Daniel B. Syme has been one of the
rabbis.
"Our feeling is that no one should
be deprived of going somewhere to
pray on the High Holy Days," he said.
Between 750 and 1,000 people
have taken advantage of this opportu-
nity, he said, "many of
whom have become mem-
bers."
Whether trying to
attract new members, or
catering to the ever-chang-
ing needs of their congre-
gants, Reform rabbis have
tried to adapt to the way
the High Holy Days are
celebrated in recent years.
Temple Beth El added
the Tashlich service (cast-
ing sins upon the water)

two years ago at the Franklin Cider
Mill. It now holds three Rosh
Hashanah services for members in the
main sanctuary and three for non-
members in the social hall. Six Kol
Nidre services, and four morning Yom
Kippur services, are held with the
same breakdown.
Very little change in the High Holy
Days structure and texts has taken
place at Temple Emanu-El in Oak
Park, said Rabbi Joseph Klein, but a
"break the fast" was added last year in
the foyer.
"We, as a congregation, were very
pleased with the services," he said.
Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield now offers
two additional types of `-=-,
High Holy Day ser-
vices to the regular ser-
vices. A family-oriented
service is offered for
parents and children,
with heavy youth
group participation.
Parents may also send
their children to a sepa-,--'
rate afternoon service.
A clergy member
will lead all services,
and the structure
