directed his first film, Reality Bites
(1994), in which he starred alongside
Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke.
That film, which was marketed to
capture the elusive "Generation X"
audience only garnered resentment
from the very group it was supposed
to encapsulate.
Stiller moved on to his next film,
but he was not prepared for the hostile
media attention and baffled audience
reaction to The Cable Guy (1996),
which is still considered a major speed
bump in Jim Carrey's fast road to
megastardom.
"What can you do?" Stiller asked.
"You have no effect on what happens
once you make the movie.
"I'm happy with the work I did,"
he added, "and I'm very proud of the
movie."
But The Cable Guy, a bleakly funny
look at the lingering after-effects of
the boob tube as babysitter, is remem-
bered more for Carrey's salary than
anything Stiller did. It was a sobering
experience for the director.
"It gave me a real perspective on
the highs and lows of the business," he
said. "It makes you maybe drop back a
little bit from caring that much about
getting acceptance or not.
"One thing I really learned from
the whole experience," Stiller contin-
ued, "is that once the momentum
starts going with something one way,
or people have a preconception as to
the way they're going to interpret
something, it's just going to be that,
you know?" ❑

frustrations with the television indus-
try as a whole.
"I totally understood that world,"
Stiller said. "The strange TV executive
language that they speak, strange stan-
dards for what's acceptable and what
isn't, what America can deal with and
what they can't. These arbiters of what
is right or wrong for America, and
what America will accept — like they
know."
In Permanent Midnight, the film-
makers create a parody of "ALF" —
the show about the furry little Alien
Life Form, hence the name, who takes
up residence in the suburban house-
hold of the Tanners' — but Stiller,
whose own program regularly took
aim at television's absurdities, thinks
it's getting more difficult to do that
effectively.
"You talk about these TV shows
that are coming up, and they're
[already] parodies of themselves," he
explained.
The son of Anne Meara and Jerry
Stiller, the longstanding comedy duo
who have also done stellar individual
work (most recently: Meara's obsessive
mother in The Daytrippers; Stiller as
George's berating father on
"Seinfeld"), Ben Stiller briefly attend-
ed UCLA before diving into his own
career.
For his television show, Stiller
served not only as the star, but as a
writer, director and producer.
On screen, Stiller appeared in small
roles in a number of forgettable films,
like Fresh Horses and Next of Kin, then
