unbeliever" — in a speech to the
B'nai B'rith Society in Vienna:
"Because I was a Jew I found myself
free from many prejudices which
restricted others in the use of the
intellect; and as a Jew I was pre-
pared to join the opposition and to
do without agreement with the
compact majority."
The last chapter of Jews lays out
the future of Jewish life, with anti-
Semitism on the wane and Israel as
a safe place for Jews to call home.
But unlike Alan Dershowitz's The

Vanishing American Jew: In Search of
Jewish Identity in the Next Century
and Samuel Heilman's Portrait of
American Jews: The Last Half of the
20th Century, Hertzberg denounces

the argument that the only way
Judaism will survive is through the
Orthodox movement.
Instead he pokes holes in Der-
showitz's and Heilman's theories by
bringing up statistics from the 1990
National Population Survey of
American Jewry that suggest that
those raised Orthodox are signifi-
candy less likely to remain Ortho-
dox.
And, he claims, it is because of
fundamentalists, including the ultra-
Orthodox, that a dangerous kind of
factionalism has arisen.
"The greatest threat to the Jewish
people today comes not from the
outside; it comes from the element
of the Jewish people which regards
itself as beyond criticism — and as
the judge and jury of the rest," Jews
states.
"The new messianists, and the
ultra-Orthodox who are often their
kindred spirits, are not only mis-
leading Israel, they are a threat to
the Jewish world as a whole," the
authors continue.
Hertzberg, the son of a Chasidic
rabbi who was raised in the Ortho-
dox neighborhoods of Baltimore,
denies that this literary finger point-
ing constitutes Orthodox-bashing.
"That is not my intention," he says.
Nor is it to instill fear about the
future. Hertzberg and Hirt-Man-
heimer end their book on an uplift-
ing note. Today, they assert, more
and more Jews — secular, Reform,
Conservative and Orthodox — are
clinging to God, and Judaism,
through study.
The river, they write, will contin-
ue to flow.

honoring

Sam & Minnie Berman

Who will receive the justice
Louis D. Brandeis Award

A modest, folksy man, Sam Berman was born in Poland, survived the
Holocaust and after the war, set his sights on Palestine, the country of his
dreams. Intercepted mid-way by the British Navy, he and his brother,
Alter, spent eight months in Cyprus only to be released when the British
departed Palestine. But his personal Odyssey didn't end there. Settling in
a kibbutz and finding employment in agriculture, he enlisted in the Haganah and fought In Israel's War of
Independence in 1948 and the subsequent Sinai Campaign in 1956. Alter, Sam's brother, died in combat in
1948. In 1957, Sam came to the United States, where he worked successively as an electrician, a partner in a
landscaping .company and, finally, as a partner in Mastercraft Leather of Auburn Hills.
Minnie Berman, a native of Newark, New Jersey, graduated from Central High School, enrolled in Wayne
State University, studied art at Cass Tech, OCC and the Birmingham-Bloomfield Art Association. She was also a
charter-member and partner in the former Artists Gallery of Farmington Hills.
The Bermans' passionate commitment to Israel and Jewish education found expression in their support for
Israel Bonds, Mogen David Adom (where they endowed six ambulances), Yeshiva Beth Yehuda, Machon
L'Torah and ORT.
