couldn't believe what a good fit it was
for us."
I Love You, You're Perfect, Now
Change, starring David Nairn,
Christopher Sutton, Kelly Anne Clark
and Kate Willinger, revolves around a
series of sketches about dating, mar-
riage, kids and in-laws.
Willinger, who's had bit parts on
television and performed on the stage
in New York and locally with the Attic
and Jewish Ensemble theaters, said the
musical's more than 40 characters
relate to real-life situations from a
comic point of view.
"They are very real relationships,
things you would see every day," she
said, "but with a funny spin."
Goldstein said he looked forward
to seeing the play again after seeing it
once in Toronto. He said the show
will appeal to the hip crowd of Bar-
Ilan University supporters.
"The play is very well reviewed," he
said, adding that he and his wife
enjoyed the Canadian performance.
And although Bar-Ilan supporters
chose the performance in part because
of its Seinfeld-esque take on relation-
ships, Willinger said there is nothing
overtly Jewish about any of the scenes.
"The closest is probably a scene I

am in about a widow and a widower
who meet at a funeral and decide to
give it a go," said Willinger, who was
raised in a secular Jewish household in
New York.
"Their names are Muriel and
Albert and I am having to bite my
tongue to avoid doing Jewish readings
on them."
The Gem hosted the first perfor-
mance of the musical comedy on
Wednesday night during a private
party given by the theater's owner,
Detroit developer Chuck Forbes.
Previews will be offered through
Sept. 20, with the official opening on
the 24th and an expected run through
Jan. 3, 1999. For information about
additional performances and ticket
prices, call the Gem Theatre box office
at (313) 963-9800. ❑

Tickets for the Bar Ilan benefit on
Thursday, Sept. 24, include a juice
bar and refreshments. Doors open
at 7 p.m.; the opening program is
at 7:40 p.m.; and the curtain rises
at 8 p.m. A range of donor oppor-
tunities is available. For more
information or to order tickets,
call the Bar Ilan office at (248)

Debut CD For 60 Second Crush

Dana Forester embodies the image of
the "tall and cool and pretty ... dressed
black as coal" bass-playing femme
fatale immortalized in the
Smithereens' "Wall of Sleep."
Unlike her fictional foil, Forester, a
Jewish woman from Ferndale, does
not cop the stone-dead stance of Bill
Wyman. Conversely, 60 Second
Crush's bassist appears to be riding
one big kahuna of a wave on stage,
using her bass for balance.
It's not difficult to fathom why: the
10 mega-flavorful tracks of post-hard
rock on 60 Second Crush's debut CD,
Love in a Minute (Aural Pleasure
Records), encourages a perpetual-
motion, groove machine performance
from the Detroit-based quintet.
Forester, formerly of the Motor
Dolls and the Vertical Pillows, is only
one of five reasons why 60 Second
Crush works. She is joined by Brian
Smith (Black Mali, Shamus), possibly
the most wicked Detroit drummer to
smack a snare in a while; the six-string
soundweave of Peder Seglund's coal-
grey rhythm landscape; the vivid leads

of Jake Smith (Brothers From Another
Planet, Park the Karma); and lead
singer Tom Harman, who fronts the
band with a vocal delivery that is con-
fident without being too cocky, and
sincere without being pretentious.

and Mew also will perforin. Doors
