On the foreign policy front, Jewish
leaders generally agree that the admin-
istration seems adrift and timid,
despite the recent cruise missile attacks
against Osama bin Laden. They point
to the decision- to abandon spot
inspections of Iraq's chemical and bio-
logical weapons program as a glaring
example.
The official explanation is that the
administration wanted to hold the
anti-Iraq coalition together, and gave
in on inspections to keep the
Europeans on track with sanctions.
But few in Washington believe that;
the dominant view is that Mr. Clinton
desperately- wanted to avoid a corn-
plex, potentially risky foreign policy
decision while his energies were
focused on self-defense.
Criticism of the administration's
flaccid Mideast policy is mounting
from hard-liners and doves alike.
Although nobody knows exactly how
U.S. policy might help save Russian
President Boris Yeltsin's skin, there is
apprehension that Mr. Clinton may
- not be able to focus on a crisis that
could be the .most dangerous in
decades.
Jews are unlikely to join the hate-
Clinton chorus that has been conduct-
ed since 1992 by the Republican lead-
ership, with harmony vocals by bizarre
far-right groups that hold the presi-
dent responsible for everything from
Vince Foster's death to sunspots.
Some Jewish leaders and politicians,
like Senator Lieberman, seem deeply
disturbed-by Mr. Clinton's sexual
escapades and his willingness to put
the country, his staff and his family
through a wringer to avoid taking
responsibility for his actions.
But even more seem anxious about
the policy repercussions. Several said
they would be willing to see him stay
in office, if they thought he was capa-
ble of strong, effective leadership. But
what they see is something else — an
isolated, embattled president consumed
with his fight for self-preservation.
Many Republicans are gleeful
about Mr. Clinton's ultimate political
crisis. Jewish leaders, in general, are
disheartened and worried; it's a story
without good guys, they say. Mr.
Clinton hasn't done worse things
than many of his predecessors, but
the situation has snowballed, and
now there are ample indications that
his ability to lead has been severely
weakened.
Perhaps fatally weakened, some
Jewish leaders are concluding with
sadness.
