His many TV projects include JFK
Reckless Youth with Robin Tunney and

This fall, the former Detroiter's
Polone-Winer- Company brings the
film What We Did That Night, starring
Rick Schroeder, to ABC.
"The search for meaning and how
one fights for that can be comedy,
drama or adventure," says Winer, 50,
the father of 7-year-old Devon Rose.
"I remember when I was about to
have my bar mitzvah at Shaarey
Zedek. I refused to do anything until I
understood what it meant, and my
parents, Sidney and Melba Winer,
went to great lengths to get me a tutor
who could answer my questions.
"I spent many years [after that]

he quest to find meaning in
life runs through the films
of Harry Winer, a former
Detroiter making his mark
in Hollywood. The theme prevails,
explains the writer/director/producer,
because it represents a personal search
as well.
Winer's latest made-for-TV movie,
J eremiah, carries his special interest
into biblical times. Based on the life of
the last prophet of the Old Testament,
the script follows a shy young man
whose vision of himself as God's mes-
senger makes him wonder whether he
is going mad.
Before Jeremiah is shown on TNT,
the production starring Oliver Reed
and Patrick Dempsey will be previewed
as part of the Centennial Celebration
of the Jewish Federation of Metropoli-
tan Detroit. Winer will be in town to
introduce it at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.
15, during a free showing at the
Maple Theatre.
"The traditions that were
initiated from the moment God
handed the laws to Moses is
what is being encouraged by
Jeremiah for his friends and
neighbors," Winer says about
his most recent project. "It's
when friends and neighbors
don't heed that call, when they
don't look out for one another,
that they bring about their own
ruin.
"The idea of the Jewish com-
munity taking care of its own,
which is celebrated with this cen-
tennial, goes back not just 100
years but thousands of years, and
that's what the film gives as a
subject for reflection."
Since leaving the area after
earning a bachelor's degree from
the University of Michigan, .
Winer has brought many fea-
ture and TV films to viewers.
For the big screen, he pro-
duced and directed House Arrest Filmmaker Harry Winer: A quest to find mean-
with Jamie Lee Curtis and
ing.
