A Cerebration

Of Scholars

This year's lecture series organized •
by the Cohn-Haddow Center at
Wayne State University features an
array of national and international
Jewish scholars.
The series, which begins Monday,
will feature speakers from the
University of Pennsylvania, Tel-Aviv
and Paris lecturing on the campus
and at sites in the community. The
center's 10th anniversary will be cel-
ebrated with a banquet at Adat
Shalom Synagogue in March.
University"of Toronto professor
Derek . Penslar, the first lecturer of
the year, will give the talk on, 'Are
Israelis Zionists? Jewish identity in
the Jewish state" to commemorate
the 50th birthday of Israel at the
Epstein Museum/Gallery at 7:30
p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at the Kahn
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
When Zachary Baker, chief
librarian of the YIVO Institute for
Jewish Research in New York, comes
to town on Nov. 1-2, he will give a
slide presentation entitled "How to
Find Your Shtetl and What To Do
When You Get There: The
Changing Map of Eastern Europe."
According to Baker, one-third to
one-half of the researchers who
come into his library are working on
an aspect of genealogical research.
"The whole question of searching
for one's roots became popular in
the 1970s, and hasn't ceased with
the break-up of the Soviet Union
and Soviet bloc countries," he said.
Baker will speak at 3 p.m. Nov. 1
at Congregation B'nai David and at
noon and 3 p.m. Nov. 2 at an as-yet
undetermined site at WSU.
Harvard University sociologist
Nathan Glazer will be the keynote
speaker at the International
Conference on Jews and the Urban
Experience. His talk on the Jewish
urban experience in historical per-
spective will be at Temple Beth-El.
Other events in the center's
schedule include a concert by the
group Alhambra of Judeo-Espanol
music Nov. 22 at Temple Israel and
presentations by Steven Weiland
Jan. 17 at Borders Books & Music
in Farmington Hills, by Pnina Lahav
April 22 at WSU Law School and
by Robert Moses Shapiro May 16.
Most events are free to the public.
