Traverse City
Celebrates

Members of Congregation Beth El in
Traverse City celebrated Israel's 50th
anniversary in August with a religious
school "day trip" to Israel, Israeli folk
dancing in the streets, an open house
at the synagogue and a Shabbat wor-
ship service.
Religious School Director Julie
Stein-Makowsky and student Rabbi
Holly Cohn planned an afternoon of
activities for the religious school expe-
rience. Passports for each child were
made and the imaginary trip to Israel
began. The children visited the
Wailing Wall, which had been con-
structed in the social hall, went on an
archaeological dig in a sand box, deco-
rated cookies in the shape of Israel and
the Israeli flag, sang songs and learned
dances.
Each Friday throughout the sum-
mer, the Traverse City Downtown
Association presented Friday Night
Live, with music, art and food in the
downtown streets. Aug. 21 was World
Beat Night. Members of Beth El set
up a display of posters from Israel and
taught traditional folk dances to any-
one willing to give their feet a chance.
In conjunction with Friday Night
Live, the congregation hosted an open
houie at the synagogue, which is two
blocks from downtown. Members
brought in books, gift items, clothing,
and photographs from Israel.
Shabbat services included reading
and prayers for peace in Israel and the
singing of Israeli songs.
Congregation Beth El is the oldest
synagogue building in continuous use
in Michigan and is a state historical
site. Services are bi-weekly from
September through May. Call the syn-
agogue at (616) 946-1913.
