"When I saw the piece in your col- umn about the opening of Zoup!, I just had to write to you. You men- tioned that this is the first soup-only restaurant in Michigan, and I beg to differ with you. "In 1977, with the opening of Fair- lane Town Center, my father, Morris Schuster, and uncles Eugene and Todd Schuster, opened 'Nanny's Soup Ket- tle' in the center of the mall. It was a labor of love as it combined my grandmother's (Anne Schuster, my Nanny) soup recipes with an art deco theme complete with period art from my family's gallery, London Arts in the Fisher Building. "Nanny's had all the delicious soups my family has loved for years: her mouthwatering cabbage borscht with big chunks of meat, tomatoes, cabbage and a hint of spiciness; her thick mushroom barley soup with fresh mushrooms; and her world-famous marzah ball soup with fluffy marzah balls, chicken, carrots and celery, just to name a few. "She and the head chef collaborated on a number of different soups as well and she was involved in the expansion of the restaurant into Oakland Mall. With its unique art deco decor, the restaurant had people coming from all over to sample the soups and view the art. It also had a special section for parties, and it's where I celebrated my Sweet 16 in 1982. The restaurant closed in 1984 and is now occupied by Kerby's Coney Island. However, it lives on at my house as I have all the dishes, silverware and special custom-made soup spoons and soup bowls that I use every day. Even my daughter, who is 3, knows the meaning of the spoons and calls them `Nanny's spoons.' Soup is always eaten out of those bowls and it takes me back 20 years every time I use them. "I hope Zoup! is a success. You bet I will be waiting in line with everyone ":_ - VT.R70)>V p a r e NON 6199 ORCHARD LAKE RD., NORTH OF MAPLE WEST BLOOMFIELD 248-737-8600 9/11 1998 Detroit Jewish News 10
