... Bronze Door was the name of the
place, and the Renaissance bronze
doors depicting "Victory" typified the
art of that period and of the fine
restaurant on Kercheval.
Middle Eastern dishes were fea-
tured at Cedars Lounge on W.
Columbia, with its lighting fixtures
from India, palm trees that touched
the ceiling, wrought iron lattice interi-

the International Dancing Dollies in
their native costumes from places
around the world.

able in either a steak or an equally fine
sandwich ... The perch was a carryover
from the days when the former Chop
House chef, Eddie Dobler, ran the
kitchen at Breitmeyer's ... This was a
blind pig where Detroit Athletic Club
members used to go on Friday night
and eat a mess of sauteed perch on
card tables while seated on empty
wooden cases that once contained
"stuff right off the boat."
Danish turbot, a form of sole, was
also one of the specialties ... Other
contributions of the London Chop
House to the gastronomic culture of
Detroit included the Caesar salad,
which it introduced here (original
concoction was by House of Murphy
in California), and a wine cellar that
bossman Les Gruber modestly
described as the "best in the Midwest,
maybe from New York to California."

a reminder not to forget the Labor Day

Arts, Beats & Eats is expected to
have an attendance of more than
300,000 ... with over 30 restaurants
on hand for the 4-day outdoor festival
... Also 125 artists and 40 local and
