Essentially, they are the same movies.
They are both about Jewish oppres-
sion in the ancient world. They are
both biblical epics with huge casts.
They both were made in the '50s.
They both star Charlton Heston.
"I believe Ben Hui- is the better
movie, but then I wondered how I
could have the 50 greatest Jewish
movies and not have The Ten
Commandments because it's the ulti-
mate Jewish story.
Bernheimer, who took film classes
in college on her way to a theater
degree, started out as a theater critic.
After she moved on to the movie
scene, she also was given feature
assignments that introduced her to
directors and actors.
As she worked on her book, she
aimed her remarks toward the average
person who likes movies. She wanted
it to be both a guide and a scholarly
analysis, helpful to those interested in
renting otherwise unfamiliar videos.
"Someone who is a real movie buff
will enjoy some of the background
information, the behind-the-scenes
stories, the biographical detail," the
author says. "Maybe they'll find some
movies worth another look."
Bernheimer expresses strong opin-
ions about movies she questioned as
worthy of even a first look.
"Sophie's Choice is, in many ways, a
very reprehensible film even though
it's made very beautifully and has great
performances," the author says.
"The objectionable story concerns a
Polish gentile who survives the
Holocaust only to be victimized by a
crazy, demonic Jew. It's not a story
that is in any way representative of
[those times]."
As she sorted through available
movies, the reviewer realized that
Judaism as a religion was rarely
.explored. The exception would be
documentaries that are not widely
available.
Bernheimer, 47, thinks that age
entered into her choices but only
slightly. If she were younger, she says,
her film selections might have been
less serious.
"I think that today there are many
people who are increasingly interested
in what it means to be Jewish and in
[the essence of] their Jewish culture,
heritage and background," Bernheimer
says.
"I feel that a good place to look for
questions and answers and discussions
of those issues is the movies, which
provide some sort of a connection." 1111
