86 Detroit Jewish News
the Women's Division
of the Jewish Federation
of Broward County in
Florida, recently chaired an event that
featured film critic Gene Siskel.
His topic, "How Jews Are Portrayed
in Film," hit home very quickly.
While watching the movie My
Giant featuring Billy Crystal, she took
offense at the derisive way Crystal's
character spoke about Jews, the very
point Siskel was making in his speech.
"Gene Siskel's presentation empha-
sized that Jews must be sensitive about
how Jews are portrayed, particularly
by other Jews," Reines says. "We can't
afford to be comfortable and take our
position for granted."
Siskel brings his presenta-
tion to Michigan Tuesday,
Sept. 15, when he
addresses members and
guests of the Greater
Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah during a lun-
cheon program at
Temple Israel.
The Chicago-based
critic, using scenes on
videotape, points
out how
Jewish
filmmakers turn their religion into a
joke and forge negative stereotypes,
reports James D. Davis, a Florida reli-
gion editor who's heard Siskel speak
on the portrayal of Jews in film.
Among the movies Siskel took issue
with, according to Davis, were The
Birdcage (a man announces his homo-
sexuality with obvious pride — and his
Jewishness with clear embarrassment),
The Mirror Has Two Faces (a bride and
her mother trade caustic insults) and A
Simple Wish (a little girl screams as a
giant rabbi tries to stomp her).
"I'm often disappointed in the films
that the mass audience endorses," Siskel
says. "Filmmakers and executives are
chasing money more than quality, and
I think that people are too easily influ-
enced by 30-second TV ads."
Siskel's most current opinions are
heard every Sunday morning on
WXYZ-Channel 7 as he discusses fea-
ture films with Roger Ebert on
their show of 22 years, "Siskel
Ebert."
The Tribune Media Services
syndicated columnist, who
writes for TV Guide as well, also-
presents his comments on "CBS
This Morning" heard in the
metro area on WWJ-Channel 62.
"Gene is intelligent and serious,
has a social conscience, is a dedicated
parent and is stimulating to talk
with," says Ebert, adding a
warning.
"Whenever any
kind of a plan is set-
tled on, some mys-
terious little gnaw-
ing thing begins to
grow within Gene,
compelling him to
change it. Whether
it be a screening, a
show outline, a
flight, a speech,
Gene Siskel will
speak at Hadassah
opening meeting.
