SHIRLEE BLOOM'S TRADITIONAL ROSH HASHANAH CARRY-OUT MENU COMPLETE DINNERS War I era to explain the evolution of Detroit's two separate communities: the black city of Detroit and its white suburbs. But while detailing the post-World War II migration of the white popula- tion out of the city of Detroit, she fails to specifically mention the Jewish migration to the northwestern sub- urbs. For Detroit, 1967 was the water- shed year. "For both whites and blacks," Jacoby writes, "1967 was the moment that forever sealed the fate of the Motor City: for whites the end of an era, for blacks the beginning of his- tory. "... The question from 1967 on was what kind of accommodation the two parts of the region would make with each other, and whethu there was still any hope of maintaining a sense of one community." One outcome of the riots was the formation of the New Detroit Committee by major Detroit business leaders, including Max Fisher, Henry Ford II, Joseph Hudson Jr. and Walter Reuther. The committee became a place where militant black leaders could express their displeasure to the white community. In March 1969, Jacoby writes, it was Max Fisher who stepped in to dif- fuse a crisis by defending the contro- versial decision by Judge George Crockett Jr. to free black suspects held for the shooting of a member of the city's all-white police force. Said Fisher, "Judge Crockett is an honest man who is trying to do what is right." Jacoby questions Fisher's action. "As he understood the situation, he had done what it took to prevent a riot — and if that meant agreeing with a black man's claim that the law was racist and could be ignored, so be it," she writes. But she adds, "The city's most pow- erful businessman had lent his prestige and authority to the idea that the law could be applied selectively on the basis of race." Emerging soon after was an issue that would ultimately impact the entire nation: cross district school bus- ing. Opposition to busing was led by Irene McCabe, a suburban Detroit housewife. She rallied her forces and received national support to oppose the ruling by U.S. District Judge Stephen Roth, a Roman Catholic. Jacoby skillfully provides an in- depth picture of what occurred, how it 10 Person Minimum, Please 312.99 • ROASTED 1/2 CHICKEN DINNER • GRILLED BONELESS BREAST OF CHICKEN STRIPS With Mixed Asparagus And Peppers With Oriental Sauce • CHICKEN WELLINGTON Stuffed With Vegetable Wild Rice And Topped With Orange Marmalade • ROAST LEAN BEEF BRISKET DINNERS ALSO INCLUDE: 5 14.99 315.99 515.99 * Vegetarian Chopped Liver OR Beef Chopped Liver * Chicken Soup With Matzo Ball OR Mushroom Barley Soup * Toasted Farfel With Mushrooms OR Potatoes Anna With Onions, Parsley and Herbs * French Cut Bean Almondine * Challa Bread (Loaf Serves 6) A LA CARTE rl'EMS '7 49 '7 49 • VEGETARIAN CHOPPED LIVER • BEEF CHOPPED LIVER • GEFILTE FISH • CHICKEN SOUP. • MUSHROOM BARLEY SOUP • MATZO BALLS • CHICKEN KREPLACH •,,.40. • BEEF KREPLACH • 1/2 ROASTED CHICKEN • BONELESS CHICKEN BREAST '4 49 qt.
