Open Program
The Auxiliary for Jewish Aged of the
Jewish Home and Aging Services will
hold its annual fall opening meeting
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 at
Temple Beth-El.
The event will feature outstanding
local professional men addressing their
life's work and memorable moments:
"Big Al" Muskovitz, radio personality,
WOMC 104.3; Don Shane, sports-
caster, WXYZ-TV; Jeffrey Zaslow,
columnist, Chicago Sun Times.
The cost: donor $20 and patron
$36 (this includes boutiques, brunch
and program). Reservations are

MSU Hillel
Slates Events
Michigan State University Hillel will
sponsor an Israeli self defense course 7
p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Hillel. This is
a free trial session of Xerev Gideon,
taught by Isaac Cohen, creator of the

Hillel's Graduate and Professional
Group will have a bar night 9 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Harper's on
Albert Street in East Lansing.
Hillel's first free Shabbat dinner will
be 6:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at Hillel.
Samantha Gross, Mandy Berg and
Ross Kuhlberg will speak about travel-
ing to Israel on the UJA winter mis-

ICA Elects
New Board
The Israel Cancer Association .(ICA),
Michigan Branch, has elected new
officers along with 14 new directors.
The branch in Michigan raises funds
for its parent organization in Israel.
ICA is Israel's largest charitable organi-
zation, funding treatment for cancer
patients, research, hospice facilities,
education and many other cancer-
related services.
Hannan Lis is the new president. In
addition to Lis, other officers elected
were: president emeritus, Mel Kepes;
vice presidents: Ernie Curtis, Steve
Gray, Alex Greenberger, Dr. Boaz
Milner, Zoltan Rubin, and Howard
Wallach; co-treasurers: Henry Kupfer
and Ben Waxenberg; secretary: Larry
Raizman; assistant secretary: Mary
Papo; parliamentarians: Dorothy
Curtis, Ann Eisenberg and Agi Rubin;
liaison with Israel: Dr. Edgar Ben-
Joseph, Dr. Boaz Milner and Chava
Mozes.
Other directors reelected to the
board were: Regina Feuer, Anna
Greenberger, Joseph Gyongyosi,
Hermina Hirsch, Stefa Kupfer, Werner
Osten, Elena Weiss and Lillian Wohl,

Federation
Grant Recipients
Two outreach programs are among the
five recipients of grants approved by .
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit from its Max M. Fisher Jewish
Community Foundation.
The funds, totaling $73,720, will
go for a variety of projects sponsored
by agencies, organizations and congre-
gations.
Receiving first-time grants from the
foundation are the Michigan Jewish
AIDS Coalition ECHO program and
Congregation Beth Shalom's
Gathering Place. With a grant of
$20,000, the MJAC program will
develop models of inclusion and teach
tolerance.
Congregation Beth Shalom is plan-
ing to use its grant Of $19,720 for
programs to engage new American
families ad older adults targeted by
outreach efforts by non-Jewish reli-
gious institutions.
The Jewish Community Council
received $7,000 to develop its
archives, which contain materials of
importance to the Jewish community
and the city of Detroit.
Michigan State University will use
its second-year grant of $21,000 to
expand its Jewish studies programs to
offer a more complete Hebrew cur-
riculum and add classes due to
increased enrollment.
Temple Kol Ami received $6,000
for its Turn Saturday Into Shabbat
program for families with children in
kindergarten through 3rd grade. Each
class session includes services and pro-
gramming for parents and children.
Open to non-members, Kol Ami's
program requires parents to partici-
pate.
