helped generate $57,000 — just about
what she thought she'd need for the
campaign.
If she wins the seat, Jacobs' top pri-
orities will be education, mental
health reform, the environment and
welfare reform.
Maldonado had not received any
contributions before August's primary,
according to the Michigan Campaign
Finance Committee, and had spent
$224.42 — $64 for postage, and the
rest for "miscellaneous expenses."
Jacobs said the biggest challenge
isn't her competitor, but trying to
learn everything she feels she needs to
in order to prepare herself for what
may lie ahead.
``I'm just trying to get a grasp of
everything," she said, noting the stacks
of papers she has in her office to study.
Jacobs, who spent 14 years on the
Huntington Woods City Commission

ith two months left until
the general election in
November, the only
thing Gilda Jacobs needs
is a new pair of walking shoes.
"I've already worn through one
pair," said the Oakland County com-
missioner and candidate for the 35th
District state House seat. The district
she currently represents is about half
the size as the one she hopes to repre-
sent, so she's been knocking on a lot
of doors.
Jacobs' county commission seat,
which she's held for four years,
encompasses Huntington Woods,
Pleasant Ridge, southwestern Royal
Oak, northern Oak Park and two
precincts in Southfield. The state
House seat includes Royal
Oak Township, Ferndale,
Berkley and the rest of
Oak Park, but doesn't
include the Royal Oak or
Southfield precincts.
Jacobs, a Democrat and
former Huntington Woods
city commissioner, is pur-
suing the seat vacated by
term-limited Democrat
David Gubow, who has
held the job for 14 years.
She faces Republican new-
corner Cecilio Maldonado
for the seat.
Jacobs got a huge head
start on her opponent,
retiring from her job as co-
director of development at
Jewish Association for
Residential Care (JARC) in
March to concentrate fully
on the race. She
announced her candidacy a
year earlier.
Jacobs got the backing
of Gubow early on, and
that "set the tone," she
said. Two fund-raisers
