Ilene Singer.

last year, but the problem is funding.
She said money could come from the
interest earned from special/reserve
accounts, with the possibility of
matching federal money.
In a related issue, with a federal
mandate of 911 services requiring the
ability to locate cell phone users with-
in 150 yards, Singer "would not mind
a small, tiny raise to help — maybe
from cellular phone users.
"I'm looking for a shared responsi-
bility between government and the
public," said the single Oakland
University graduate.
The commission post pays an
annual salary of $25,111.
Taub, married for 37 years with
three grown children, agrees the coun-
ty needs an enhanced 911 system and
sees the money coming from the
county's general fund, not "hidden
taxes" like user fees on phone bills.
"We applied for a federal grant, and
we're still waiting," she said.
•
A Bloomfield Hills resident and
member of Temple Kol Ami, Taub
supports the county's capital improve-
ments wish list, which includes a new
$99 million jail and a $70 million
courthouse expansion. She pointed
out that Wayne County has 2.2 mil-
lion residents and 64 county judges.
Oakland County has 1.2 million resi-
dents and only 21 judges.
Singer, who has so far raised about
$3,600 in campaign funds, said she
will "bring a new style of leadership
and a new mind-set to county govern-
ment."
She's running to give the citizens "a
government responsive to their con-
cerns and a government that will find
new and innovative ways to provide
services."
