A Clean Slate

Hillel teachers get a new contract,
but their old leader loses in arbitration.

Association President Malka
Littman was unavailable for inter-
view, but in a voice-mail message
said, "The association is shocked
and very saddened at the outcome,
and, in truth, we don't understand
hclw the decision was reached."
Ellmann said that while there is
always a possibility of further
appeals, such arbitration decisions
are generally final. His decision was
based on briefs submitted by attor-
neys from each side, along with tes-
timony of "a number of witnesses
on both sides," but he would not
disclose details.
Asked if it had been a difficult
decision, Ellmann said, "All deci-
sions, I guess, are difficult in a
sense. One never likes to have to

teachers and board ratified
a three-year contract on
Monday night.
Noticeably absent from negotia-
tions was the Hillel Day School
Teachers' Association former presi-
dent, Shula Fleischer, who five days
earlier had lost her apbitration case
against the Conservative day school.
Fleischer, a Judaic studies teacher at
Hillel for 23 years, was dismissed in
January amid board and administra-
tion allegations that she had a history
of classroom misconduct. She
appealed the decision before an inde-
pendent arbitrator, Erwin Ellmann,
but on August 26 Ellmann upheld the
board's decision.
Hillel President Steven Margolin
expressed relief. "I'm glad the matter is
behind us, but I won't talk about-the
specifics of the incident or engage in
lashon hora (slander)," he said. "We
have provided, and will continue to
provide, an environment dedicated to
fostering the- spiritual, emotional and
academic growth of our students."
Fleischer and her attorney, Mark
Cousens, declined to comment on the
ruling. Hillel Day School Teachers'
