can be obtained at the many open-air
markets in Thailand ... Also the Thai
noodles are sold on the street or in the
open markets ... Many natives have a
hibachi stove on the back of a motor-
cycle or cart and sell noodle soup.
It would be a weak review not to
tell about the Yum Apple Salad ... a
unique blend of flavors with shredded
chicken, Granny Smith apple slivers,
toasted coconut, cashews, red onions
tossed in a sauce and served over a bed
of lettuce ... This is a big favorite at
Thai restaurants.
Thai food is hot, but adapts happily
to Western palates, as its spicy heat can
be tempered with soup, and the most
searing and pungent sauces are usually
added by the diner at the table.
If mild food is preferred, you can
usually just ignore the sauces ... Or
simply inform your server that you
want your food mild or medium.
The charming personalities of
Pairin and her daughter, Sopa, are
integral reasons why so many people
have adopted River Kwai restaurant ...
But the authenticity and goodness of
its food is beyond question ... and for
certain the main reason.
THIS SUNDAY'S annual party by
Excalibur, at Franklin and Northwest-
ern, will be a two-fold benefit celebra-
tion.
It's another anniversary ... and
shindig to welcome the already-
opened Excalibur Banquet Center in
back of the restaurant ... $10 mini-
mum donation goes to provide food
for the homeless and hungry.
Music, dancing, hors d'oeures and
sweets will be at both locations.
CIRCLE OF FELLOWS, founded
in 1983 by Stephanie Germack and
becoming a major social arm of the
former Michigan Cancer Foundation,
is noted for its different types of affairs
which the members are entitled to
attend.
It is always a much-looked-for
event, with membership in the Kar-
manos Cancer Institute also helping
fund needed research, prevention and
patient care programs.
This year's was another special
breed ... Those who just knew it
would be, held at the Detroit Zoo,
soon discovered what a fine thing they
were attending.
The former bird area was a good
place to serve desserts ... and the cen-
ter region a wonderful sector for
party-giving with tables, seating and
bar ... Circle of Fellows guests ate
