University of Michigan undergradu-
ate Sam Apple, first-place winner of
the American Jewish Committee/
Hillel Foundations 1998 college
essay contest. He received 52,500
for his winning entry on the topic
"What Israel Means To Me." In part,
he wrote: "Only when we see
beyond our idealized gaze can we
understand the sacrifices Zionists
have made and continue to make for
the sake of world Jewry...There is no
more meaningful place to live than
Israel because there is no ocher place
as important to its people, both his-
torically as the center of our reli-
gion, and pragmatically as a safe
haven for Jews in danger."
Albert L. Holtz has been reappoint-
ed as chairperson and Michael R.
Kramer has been reappointed as a

Gelfond is national president of the
Association of Jewish Community
Organizations Personnel (AJCOP),

behalf of the Jewish people. He is the
only three., tirne chairman of the
Campaign Directors Institute and is
the recipient of the Council of
Jewish Federations' Vivian Rabineau
Memorial Award for the profession-
-alism, creativity and commitment to
Jewish values.

Scholarship awards directed specifically
to Hispanic graduating seniors from
Detroit's Western International and
Southwestern high
schools were
recently granted
by the Myron P
Leven Hispanic
Scholarship
Program. The pro-
gram, sponsored
by Attorney
Myron P Leven,
since 1985 has

given 216 scholar-
ships in the amounts of $1000 and
5500 to the Hispanic high school gradu-
ating seniors who can qualify academi-
cally and who have a financial need.
In addition to the Hispanic scholar-
ships, Leven recently gave an additional
$100,000 to Wayne State University for
Hispanic students with bachelor degrees
who seek advanced degrees.
Leven practices personal injury and
workers compensatin law locally.

gested reading in connection with its
second annual pre-High Holiday study
series. "Elul: A Time to Prepare. ). The

contemplation during the weeks leading
