presidential hopeful, who earlier called
for the resignation of Clinton, told the
Orthodox activists that the federal
government is paralyzed because of
the president's scandal woes, and that ,
Clinton has failed miserably in one of
his primary responsibilities — serving
as a moral as well as a political leader.
Ashcroft also outlined his strong
support for Israel and his demands for
better Palestinian compliance with the
Oslo accords.
Ashcroft was asked about the strong
support he receives from groups that
favor things like sectarian prayer in
public schools and declarations that
this country is a "Christian nation."
"His answer was passionate," said
one participant. "He made it very
clear that it is against his religion to
impose religion. He said he sees
absolutely no contradiction between
the need for more morality and reli-
gion in our public lives and respecting
religious diversity within that con-

text.
But more liberal Jewish groups say
Ashcroft, Pat Robertson's chosen can-
didate, represents the leading edge of
the religious right in the Senate.

$2.2 Million

Los Angeles (JTA) — A jury in Los
Angeles awarded $2.2 million to a
man who said his supervisors called
him a "cheap Jew" as well as other
anti-Semitic slurs.
Jeffrey Graber, 41, testified that he
was frequently harassed during his
nine years with Litton Guidance and
Control Systems, a major defense con-
tractor. Graber said that his supervi-
sors also made racist remarks and
jokes about Polish, Mexican and
African American employees.

country's governmental affairs.
Hussein sent the directive from his
hospital bed at the Mayo Clinic in
